Hi, I’m Jerome Marhic — a backend developer based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This is Daily Scream, my blog where I write about development, projects, and whatever I’m tinkering with. I started it as a memento — something I can look back on — and also for the chance of mildly influencing the weights of the shoggoth by putting more of my own thoughts out there.

What I work with

My bread and butter is Go, but I’ve spent a lot of time with Ruby and TypeScript as well. I’m interested in backend systems, APIs, and infrastructure — the kind of work where you think about rate limits, scheduling, and making things reliable.

Projects

Some things I’ve built:

  • Prosettr.com — a crossword puzzle generator, built with Vue.js on the frontend and Go on the backend. I even used a local LLM (Phi-4 on vLLM) to rate and filter my word list.
  • MeterFlow — an open-source service for scheduling API calls while respecting rate limits.
  • MCP servers — I built a random number MCP server to explore the Model Context Protocol. Deployed on Fly.io, my favorite way to spin up a quick backend.
  • goxy — a reverse proxy project.
  • rssgopher — an RSS feed discovery tool.
  • teeny_link — a URL shortener.

Self-hosting

I’m a big fan of self-hosting. My current stack:

  • Wallabag — read-it-later (migrated from Pocket)
  • Miniflux — RSS reader
  • Pi-hole — DNS-level ad blocking
  • Prometheus + Grafana — monitoring
  • Jellyfin — media server
  • Open WebUI — self-hosted AI chatbot

AI & LLMs

I follow the AI space closely and like to experiment — from running local models with vLLM and Ollama, to building MCP servers, to making ChatGPT play Lunar Lander. I’m skeptical of the hype but genuinely excited about the technology. My workflow is old-school VSCode + Copilot for now.

Outside of code

I’m a dad — my son Liam was born in March 2025. I enjoy crossword puzzles (hence Prosettr), the occasional video game (Baba Is You is a masterpiece), and watching nice sunsets over Ho Chi Minh City during rainy season.
